Be the Reason Someone’s Thankful This Thanksgiving

Nov 27, 2024

Thanksgiving is more than a holiday—it’s a chance to reflect on gratitude and giving. But have you ever wondered why some people naturally bring harmony and joy into your life? It often comes down to one thing: unselfishness.

Selfishness is at the root of most conflicts. James 4:1-2 (ESV) reminds us:

"What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?”

When we prioritize our own desires—whether it’s time, attention, or resources—disharmony creeps in. But the opposite is also true: unselfishness creates peace, gratitude, and connection.

The Heart of Thanksgiving Gratitude

As Christians, we’re called to reflect the unselfishness of Jesus. His entire ministry was about giving. He gave healing, hope, and ultimately, His life for us. Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV) challenges us:

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."

When we embrace gratitude and selflessness, we reflect Jesus’ heart and draw others closer to God. People are drawn to those who give freely and love deeply. Think about the people you’re most thankful for—they’re likely gracious, kind, and giving.

This Thanksgiving season, let’s aim to be that person for someone else.

How to Cultivate Unselfishness and Gratitude

If you want to bring more harmony and joy to your relationships, here are a few practical ways to practice unselfishness:

  1. Give Your Time
Visit someone who’s lonely, volunteer at your church, or offer a helping hand. Even small gestures, like babysitting for a tired parent or making a phone call, can make a big impact.

  2. Share Your Resources
Donate to a food pantry, buy a meal for someone in need, or share a thoughtful gift. Gratitude flows when we recognize we’ve been blessed to bless others.

  3. Speak Life
Encourage someone with your words. Proverbs 16:24 says, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” A kind word can make someone’s day.

  4. Forgive Freely
Unforgiveness weighs us down. This Thanksgiving, release resentment and extend grace, just as God has forgiven us (Colossians 3:13).

By living selflessly, we inspire others to do the same. It’s a ripple effect of love and harmony.

Be the Reason Someone’s Thankful

This Thanksgiving, don’t just reflect on what you’re thankful for—be the reason someone else feels thankful. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16 (ESV):

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Whether through small acts of kindness or simply being present, you can reflect Christ’s love in a way that inspires gratitude.
