Loving the Church as Christ Loves It

Jan 18, 2025

Hey, y’all!

The church isn’t just a building—it’s the body of Christ, a community of believers united in faith. But let’s be honest: loving the church isn’t always easy. We’re all imperfect people, and sometimes those imperfections can lead to misunderstandings and divisions. That’s why Jesus’ command in John 13:34-35 is so important:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

When we love the church as Christ loves it, we strengthen the body of Christ and reflect His light to the world. Let’s explore how love builds unity and strength within the church and how we can actively live out this calling.

1. Love Creates Unity

Unity within the church doesn’t mean we all think or act the same—it means we’re united by our shared faith and love for Christ. Love is what binds us together, even when we disagree or come from different backgrounds.

Colossians 3:14 says, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” When we prioritize love, we create a space where the church can thrive as one body, with Christ as the head.

2. Love Reflects Christ to the World

Jesus said the world would know we’re His disciples by our love for one another. When the church loves well—both within the body and outwardly to the community—it becomes a powerful testimony of God’s grace and truth.

Loving the church as Christ does means showing compassion, forgiveness, and humility. These qualities not only build stronger relationships within the church but also invite others to experience God’s love firsthand.

3. Love Strengthens the Church’s Mission

A church united in love is a church that can fulfill its mission. When we work together in love, we’re better equipped to serve others, share the Gospel, and meet the needs of our community.

Ephesians 4:16 reminds us that the body of Christ is “joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” Love fuels the church’s purpose and impact.

4. Love Requires Grace and Forgiveness

Let’s face it—church relationships aren’t always easy. We’re all imperfect, and sometimes we hurt one another. Loving the church as Christ does means extending grace and forgiveness, just as He has forgiven us.

Ephesians 4:32 encourages us: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” When we forgive and choose love, we reflect Christ’s heart and preserve the unity of the church.

5. Love Builds a Welcoming Christian Community

When love is at the center of the church, it creates an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued. This kind of Christian community becomes a haven for growth, encouragement, and healing.

Practical Steps to Love the Church as Christ Does

  • Pray for Your Church: Lift up your leaders, members, and ministries, asking God to guide and bless them.
  • Serve Faithfully: Look for ways to use your gifts to support the church’s mission and meet the needs of others.
  • Encourage Unity: Choose love and understanding over criticism, and work to resolve conflicts in a spirit of grace.
  • Be a Light in Your Community: Extend the church’s love outward by serving those in need and sharing the hope of Christ.
  • Invest in Growth: Consider working with a Christian life coach or participating in church-based discipleship programs to deepen your understanding of how to love the church well.

Challenge for Today: Think of one way you can show love to your church this week. Whether it’s encouraging a leader, volunteering for a ministry, or reaching out to someone in need, commit to building unity and strength within the body of Christ.

When we love the church as Christ does, we create a community that reflects His heart and brings glory to His name. Let’s be the kind of disciples who are known by our love—for each other and for the church He died to save.

Blessings to you all! See you tomorrow!
