The Discipline of Fasting: Strengthening Self-Control Through Sacrifice

Mar 17, 2025

Hey, y’all!

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to say no to your cravings? Whether it’s food, social media, entertainment, or anything else that pulls at your attention, our desires can feel overwhelming.

That’s why fasting is such a powerful discipline—it teaches us to say no to the flesh so we can say yes to God.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:16-18:

"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites... But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Notice Jesus didn’t say if you fast—He said when. Fasting is meant to be a regular part of the Christian life. But beyond that, it’s a powerful way to strengthen self-control and deepen our dependence on God.

Why Fasting Helps Build Self-Control

Fasting isn’t just about giving something up—it’s about training our hearts to hunger for God more than anything else.

1. Fasting Teaches Us to Say No to the Flesh

Romans 8:5 reminds us:
"For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit."

When we fast, we deny our natural cravings and shift our focus to spiritual strength.

2. Fasting Helps Break Bad Habits

If you struggle with overindulgence, distractions, or impulsive decisions, fasting can help you regain control.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:27:
"But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified."

Fasting helps train us to master our desires rather than be mastered by them.

3. Fasting Draws Us Closer to God

Jesus fasted for 40 days before beginning His ministry (Matthew 4:1-11). It wasn’t about deprivation—it was about spiritual preparation.

When we fast, we replace earthly cravings with heavenly dependence.

Ways to Fast and Strengthen Self-Control

  1. Food Fast – Skip a meal or fast for a set period, focusing on prayer instead.
  2. Social Media Fast – Take a break from scrolling and use that time to read Scripture.
  3. Entertainment Fast – Give up TV, music, or other media to spend more time with God.
  4. Speech Fast – Commit to a day of no complaining, gossip, or negative speech.

Final Thoughts

Y’all, fasting isn’t about legalism—it’s about freedom. It helps us say no to distractions and yes to God. If you’ve never fasted before, start small and watch how God uses it to strengthen your self-control.

Have you ever fasted? How did it impact your faith?

Stay disciplined, stay focused, and let your hunger lead you closer to Him!
