Survival of the fittest

Survival of the fittest.

Survival of the fittest. Boy, am I gonna annoy some folks with this one. I don’t intend for You Can Have Hope to be anything but encouraging, and on the surface this one won’t be. But I have lots on my mind, and there is a silver lining in what I’m about to share. Survival […]

terrified of god

Terrified of God.

There’s nothing more terrifying than the God Who is sovereign over all the forces of nature – indeed, over everything. This God is a threat to us way beyond anything we could dream up. He is a threat because He is holy.

Good old days

These are the good old days.

These sure have been some challenging days. But I’d suggest that for many, these will be their good old days. Here’s why.

How to reduce the pain in the world.

Your job is to reduce the pain in the world. Where do you start? The title of this blog was a little clickbaitish for sure, and you may have elected to read this because you thought you might find some answers. Sorry, pal. This isn’t the answer you wanted. What I did want to do […]

getting even

Getting even.

It may be that “getting even” with someone is something you’re plotting right now. “I’ll show them,” you say. “I’m gonna get them back. They will pay for what they’ve done.”

Even when you’re following Jesus, disorder and confusion can invade your life. When chaos comes to visit, it’s helpful to know how not only to weather those times, but to prevail during them.

all stressed out

Why am I stressed out?

“I’m stressed out.” You ever said that? Is that where you’re living right now? I watch people I know and love in recent days teeter on the verge of a “come apart” (and if you’re not a Southerner, I don’t know if that communicates well. If you’re one of my foreign readers, it just means that you are about to break down, have a fit, or conniption, or whatever.) They are legitimately stressed out.

A manifesto: January 6, 2021

I have debated with myself long and hard over this: Should I address the events of January 6, 2021? Because my stated purpose of my blog was to be “transformationally encouraging.” In my flesh, I can’t find a lot to be encouraged about. But there is hope.

Prayer for the nation.

I really wanted to address the events of January 6, but I want to wait a few more days because I want to make sure what I share is both reasoned and of God. In the meantime, I’d like to share, again, Lincoln’s prayer. There has historically been some question as to whether or not […]
